Wow sounds like a fascinating research project. Looking forward to hearing more. I was in Cambridge two days ago, just visiting for the day. I was at uni there many years ago.
Your PhD sounds super interesting! Thank you so much for sharing, looking forward to read more!
Regarding the example you mentioned about punk style illustration and tech style illustration, I do think it is great to think about why some styles relate to certain values and/or identities. And I wonder if the way an image is done (technique) would also make it relate to certain style. For example, in the punk illustration case; an image that is made in a loose way, with a cheap marker, not very refined... maybe this characteristics could exemplify the spirit of 'punk' and therefore that kind of image represents a punk style? Do you think the way something is done relates to the type of values or identity that could possibly represent?
Thanks Tania ! You're absolutely right, the very materiality (and therefore economics) of a style subtly informs the values that can be attached to it. As you pointed out, it makes a lot of sense in the case of the punk aesthetics and it does too when we think of referring to tech with vectorized shapes, thank you so much for your insight !
Hi Julien! You are welcome :), I am happy that my comment was a little helpful! I am looking forward to keep reading your letters and supporting in any way I can.
By the way, your essay on exposure was really good too and it help me understand better the concept of exposure and value of illustration!
It sounds really interesting, Julien. The punk and tech poster styles pose a different perspective, to do with what happens when you use the "wrong" style or genre. I've been experimenting with that in a literary context, but a great illustration is Matt Madden's book 99 Ways To Tell A Story.
By the way, Cambridge is wonderful: even the cafes are full of people having intellectual conversations! Great bookshops, nice cafes, and less than an hour from London. I'm sure you'll have a great time!

Thank you Terry ! I'll definitely take a look at Madden's book, thank you. This idea of a "good fit" between a text and a form is so interesting !
You're welcome. I reviewed Madden's book here, if you're interested: https://terryfreedman.substack.com/p/experimenting-with-styles?r=18suih&utm_medium=android
Brilliant ! Thank you so much !
Best wishes with your work!
Thank you Mark !
